Mission Bay is a city within a city. Rarely does any established city have the opportunity to master plan such a broad area so close in proximity to its downtown. Three hundred acres of former industrial and rail yards here are in the process of being transformed into a vibrant mixed-use community. The streets are new, the sidewalks are wide and the landscaping is lush and well maintained.
Mission Bay is ideally located, with easy access to the 280 freeway, and also has a CalTrain station at Fourth and Townsend Streets. Both are starting points for many who work south of the City.
Mission Bay is still being built out, and when it is complete it will have thousands of condominiums and apartments, parks and recreational facilities, office buildings, research facilities and a new UCSF biomedical research campus and Community Center. There are also many shops and restaurants in Mission Bay, including Safeway and a Borders Bookstore. It enjoys some of the sunniest weather in the City.
